LOS ANGELES (AFP) - The temblor, which shook the popular tourist resort area around Lake Tahoe at 11:45 am (1845 GMT), was the sixth significant quake to hit California in two weeks.
The shaker struck 19 kilometers (12 miles) north-northeast of Tahoe City and about 32 kilometers (20 miles) southwest of the Nevada gambling city of Reno, the US Geological Survey said.
A spate of quakes, including a 7.0 magnitude temblor earlier this month has made residents of the Golden State extremely jumpy and raised fears among many that the "big one" could be on its way.
