Earthquake Creates "Grand Canyon" in

Taipei - A chasm created as a result of a strong earthquake has been deepened by natural forces and created a 'grand canyon' in central Taiwan, local media reported on Thursday.

The September 21, 1999 quake, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, pushed the sandy rocks up, creating a ravine that is now 10-metres deep and 300-metres long, the Apple Daily said.

Five years ago the canyon was only five metres deep but rain has cut the chasm to 10 metres deep and it is expected to become even more dramatic in the future.

The ravine, called Ta'an River Canyon by geologists and locals, is located between the Taichung and Miaoli counties in the mountains of central Taiwan.

Difficult to reach, this is the first time Taiwan press has reported the canyon's existence and printed photos.

The earthquake that struck Taichung County in 1999 killed 2,400 people and injured 10,000 others.
