A 5.8-magnitude earthquake centered 20 miles southeast of Mexicali occurred at 10:48 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake was originally reported as a magnitude 5.9 and was felt throughout the Coachella Valley. The USGS has also reported at least three aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 4.9, since, all centered in the same spot.
"My husband felt it and I looked up and the chandelier started swinging," said Gayle Wilson of Palm Springs, who has lived in the Coachella Valley for 22 years. "Whenever that happens, I know that it’s got to be a more than a 4.0."
Earlier today a smaller 3.5-magnitude earthquake shook northern Mexico, centered about 22 miles southeast of Mexicali, at 9:54 a.m., the USGS reported.
Buildings briefly swayed in San Diego. San Diego County sheriff’s Lt. Anthony Ray says there have been no reports of damage or injury.
The USGS also recorded a 3.7-magnitude earthquake hit a remote area west of Death Valley National Park around 3:45 a.m. this morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The epicenter was about 120 miles west of Las Vegas.
