A law enforcement report reveals that 23 Somali suspected of being connected to a terrorist group were arrested in Mexico for illegally entering the country in early 2010 and were on their way to the United States, says The Washington Examiner. The group was released from custody on January 21, and only 16 were identified. A separate report says that a man with terrorist links is believed to have smuggled nearly 300 Somalis into the country.
One of the individuals identified was Mohamed Osman Noor, who is believed to be part of the Al-Shabaab terrorist group in Somalia, where it controls large portions of the country. The organization's leadership has pledged allegiance to Osama Bin Laden and has a large recruiting network in the United States, specifically in Minnesota.
"Something must have gone wrong internally for these persons to have been released by Mexican authorities. If you can move narcotics and other contraband through the porous border, you can't tell me they don't have the ability to move terrorists as well," the Washington Examiner quoted a former U.S. official who worked with the Mexican government as saying.
In related news, the same publication reports that a man in Virginia that has admitted to having contact with al-Shabaab, Anthony Joseph Tracy, has successfully smuggled nearly 300 Somalis into the country and remain here.
""We have not identified anyone. We believe all the individuals are present in the United States. But by the virtue of [the] successful smuggling scheme, we are having difficulty finding them," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeanine Linehan.
Approximately 20 Somali-American males have disappeared from the Minneapolis area and are believed to have joined al-Shabaab. At least six American recruits have been killed in Somalia after aligning with the terrorist group, and at least 14 Americans have been indicted for their role in running al-Shabaab's infrastructure in the U.S.
