HI All,

See my comments/story after this article  Grab My Gun? Get a Grip! from Holly Deyo.

My Comments / Story deals with what happened to me when an armed robbery suspect showed up at my front door wanting to get in late one night when I lived in Oregon. Unbeknownst to me he had just gotten into a shootout a few blocks away with an armed homeowner/victim...

Many of you who get my emails know that I have very strongly held views on responsible private firearms ownership as guaranteed by the Second Amendment to our almost dead and buried Constitution (not granted by the Constitution or Bill of Rights - as our natural / human rights come from God).

Most of you probably think that these views come from my 16 years in law enforcement, and they certainly were influenced by that. However there was also an influencing event that occurred before that.

In the early 1980's while I was working full time for 6 1/2 years for the US Forest Service in Oregon, my last 3 1/2 years included Law Enforcement duties on the forest. During this time I was also a Reserve Deputy for the county. In the mid eighties I left the Forest Service to pursue a full time Police career. During the next 13 years as a Patrol Officer in Seattle I dealt with many victims of violent crimes and heard their heartbreaking stories as I conducted investigations. That was the case for the ones who lived to tell their stories. Many others were not so fortunate and I instead heard the stories from their friends and families.

On to my story...

Before getting into law enforcement (while attending college for Forestry) my brother and his wife were staying with us for a time in our house near the outskirts of town - they had just moved to Oregon. Sometime between approximately 11:15 and 11:30 PM one night after we had all headed to our respective rooms for bed my brother returned to the livingroom to turn off the front porch light which was just to the right outside his bedroom window and was lighting up the bedroom. He then walked back down the hall, entered his bedroom and closed the door. Just as I heard his door latch I heard frantic knocking at the front door. My brother re-exited his room and said "I'll get it."

I yelled to him "don't open the door - find out who it is."

He spoke through the wood front door to the person outside and this person asked him for directions to get to "downtown". This was very odd as we lived at the southeast end of town on a side street in a dead end valley area with forest all around and the only way into or out of that area was by the two streets that lead into the neighborhood from the direction of "downtown" (the two main streets were separated by a wooded area / greenbelt).

I again yelled to my brother "don't open the door".

The individual acted like he couldn't understand the directions and asked my brother to open the door and show him by pointing the way. I again yelled to my brother "don't open the door" and got out of bed - grabbing the only gun I owned at the time which was a very real looking (but very ineffective) pellet pistol. My brother refused to open the door and the individual left without saying anything else.

I then called the police to report the suspicious incident. When the police arrived we discovered that the front door had blood running down it from where the individual had knocked on the door! It turned out that an armed robbery had just occurred about 4 blocks to the southwest of us on the other side of the wooded "greenbelt". The suspect had gotten into a shootout with a nearby homeowner / victim who actually chased him and shot at him. The suspect had last been seen running into the greenbelt in the direction of our street. Apparently the suspect was running down the street and our porch light going out caught his attention. The suspect then ran up to our porch and decided to try to gain entry to our house (likely to hide from the formerly pursuing homeowner and the soon to be responding police) by knocking on the door and feigning being lost.

Had my brother opened the door we would have had an armed, injured and likely desperate robbery suspect, who had just shot at someone (and who was possibly shot himself) in the house with us - in other words: a hostage situation!! And all I had to protect all of us would have been a pellet pistol or a steak knife!! That status changed shortly after that incident!! So much for living in a low crime town and a nice neighborhood!! I probably wouldn't be here relating this story if he had gotten into the house that night as seeing the fake gun I was holding he probably would have shot me. Thank God for His grace and mercy!!

Moral of the story... "Never bring a knife (or a pellet gun) to a gun fight" and,  "an armed homeowner is much safer than an unarmed homeowner."

If you don't currently own a firearm I suggest you get one (or even better - several), get training in the safe use and handling of them and buy a gun safe to keep them in so the ones you don't have with you when you aren't home will hopefully stay out of the hands of criminals. If you can not afford a real gun safe at the very least buy a relatively inexpensive heavy gauge steel locking metal gun cabinet to keep them in. Keep in mind that during a home invasion robbery if your only gun is locked away in a gun safe/cabinet you will very likely not be able to get it in time to use it to protect yourself and your family.

That being said procedures must be established and followed that make your gun accessible to you rapidly when in your home. Also if you have very young children at home be sure to develop and follow safe gun storage habits to keep them out of their reach. When they are old enough to understand also teach them to never touch a gun and get an adult if they ever see a gun unattended - at home, at friends houses, in the park, etc. When they are old enough teach them about guns and gun safety and have them attend a gun safety course tailored for their age. Kids who grow up around responsible gun owners and are introduced to shooting sports and / or hunting at an early age (and are taught to respect guns, other people's rights and the law) are much less likely to be involved in "gun play", gun accidents or to inappropriately / unsafely handle / use guns.

Even though it goes without saying - when you are inside your house keep the doors locked - that is one of the easiest crime deterrents and at the least can buy you some time to get to your "safe room" and / or get armed. I prefer being armed at all times (even when at home) but I understand that some people just aren't comfortable doing that, so if you don't keep a gun on your person at all times be able to get armed in an instant in any part of the house.

Take care.

About D

Hi Holly (and Stan),

My wife (of 34years) and I have been long time readers of your and Stan's site and books... We really appreciate your site and all that you two do in service to our Lord and Savior and in service to His people (saved and unsaved)!!

I sent out your "Grab My Gun? Get a Grip! - by Holly Deyo" article to the 45 or so folks on my "Important Issues - Group Email List" and included a personal story of mine that dramatically illustrates one reason for owning firearms!

I thought you and Stan would appreciate it as might your readers (see it below this message to you two).

While I was a full time Police Officer in Seattle in the 80's and 90's and my wife worked in an ER we both volunteered and taught Earthquake / Disaster Preparedness classes and tried to get our friends, neighbors, co-workers and employers to take personal and professional preparedness seriously. So very few did! During that time, as a HAM operator I was also on county and city ARES/RACES Disaster Communications teams. We have lived in Arizona now for the past 12+ years. Since the Lord told us to "Go to Arizona" and since moving away from the Pacific Northwest we certainly don't miss the 300 days of rain a year or the high (in my opinion) earthquake hazards. I suppose you two feel the same way about being away from the earthquake hazards of New Zealand - especially during the past few years!! God's grace really is amazing!!

Unfortunately during the past 4+ years of trying to get people prepared for what we believe is coming very soon (economic collapse, "Zombie Apocalypse" / civil unrest, and persecution of the church we see the same apathy and have heard too many times "I'm not going to be here for that" from believers (in Christ) who hold the "Pre-tribulation Rapture" position. These believers actually represent the vast majority of the believers we know and encounter. When we tell them that we are not talking about "The Wrath of God" but the "Wrath of satan and the antichrist" they flippantly repeat "I'm not going to be here for that." They also say and believe that "God would never let that happen to his people" or "God would never let that happen to America." I guess there weren't any believers who suffered severely during the 1930's Depression, Weimar Economic collapse, Argentine Economic Collapse, Brazilian collapse, etc, etc?? Some people we know have actually had the gall to say "I don't believe it will happen but if it does... I know where I am going..."

Since moving out of town to the boonies 3 years ago we have not let any of the naysayer know exactly where we moved to. We now (by the amazing grace of God) have a beautiful organic garden (minus the Fukushima fallout) and raise very sweet and loving Alpine dairy goats for milk and cheese. We also decided to discontinue going to "organized church" for the first time in our 35+ years as believers. We just couldn't handle the superficial worldly chit chat about golf and sports and this vacation and that vacation and this upcoming Christian Cruise or trip to Israel or this fun thing and that fun thing (Churchianity), also all of the false partiotism / pro-war rhetoric (War-vangelicals), etc., etc. We were considered "Doom and Gloomers" since we believe God is calling His people to prepare (not just for the church but for our unsaved friends and neighbors) and to build His kingdom. These unsaved people will be more likely to be open to the Gospel message if we can help feed, protect and comfort them during the collapse. Plus we recognize that we as neighbors will need to band together for mutual defense during "The Collapse." I recognize that we are in a progressive collapse right now but eventually it will become an "off the cliff" type of collapse that no one will be able to deny or call a "Recovery".

We believe that the heresy of the "God will rapture us all before we ever have to suffer" doctrine is a major tool of satan to keep the church asleep and seeking after the things of the world so as to experience fleeting pleasures and to build their kingdom instead of God's kingdom. Oh well, we continue to pray that the Lord opens their eyes and we continue preparing as best we can on a very limited income due to the current economic situation - which we believe is being caused by the continuing, planned destruction of the current economic and political paradigm. This will result in the continued and rapidly increasing rate of descent into the economic and social abyss that will create the conditions ripe for the rise of the NWO and the antichrist. Unfortunately we don't believe that most people (saved or unsaved) will come around and believe it (that the collapse is real and that we will be here for it) until the calamity is upon us and it can't be denied - no mater how hard they try to disbelieve what is happening to and around them.

I know I am "preaching to the choir" to you two on these subjects...

Have you two read "The Islamic Antichrist" by Joel Richardson and / or "Gods War on Terror" by Joel Richardson and Walid Shoebat? If not, I highly recommend that you do.

I know you are familiar with Glynda Lomax and the words that the Lord gives to her as you link to her site sometimes. We get a real confirmation in our Spirit that these messages are in fact from the Lord and it is what He is saying as he tries to warn the church about the time of "testing", persecution and even judgment that is coming and is now upon us.

Keep up the great work!!

Take care and God Bless!
