Water Shortage in the West – HOLLY NOTE: Stored water in reservoirs is critically low for California, Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon. Only Montana and Wyoming are in terrific shape. Even though it doesn't look that bad for Colorado, we received a notice from our water supplier yesterday that we're now in Stage 1 water restrictions. In 20 years here and enduring several droughts, this is only the 2
nd time water restrictions have been implemented.

The Chicken Shortage Is Just Another Attack Upon the American Food Supply Designed to Increase Dependence on the Government – HOLLY NOTE: A site reader shared this weekend shared that she went to Chewy.com to buy her 2 dogs' food, Authority, and couldn't get it. Though it showed in-stock on their site, it wasn't available. No explanation. Since so many pet foods are chicken-based, with the current poultry shortage, plan for their foods to go up in price as well as humans. Elizabeth said that thanks to our continue urgings to prepare, she had stocked up and was going to the store to buy extra chicken.

US West Prepares For Possible 1st Water Shortage Declaration – HOLLY NOTE: Anyone living in the 11 western states depends on stored water. This comes from 2 sources: most importantly snowpack and secondarily precipitation. Currently only Montana, Utah and Wyoming are in great shape. As we move toward June when more snow melt is stored, water levels may improve.

That said, an expected hotter-than-normal year, wind and extra usage may evaporate these gains. Water in streams and rivers is below average for most western states except Washington, northern Idaho and western Montana. This year, it's going to be wait-and-see. Or, if you want to know in advance, go to the USDA's Water Supply Forecast, select your state and basin, current month and check Forecast.

Spring Outlook: Warmer-Than-Average Temperatures to Dominate By April, May – HOLLY NOTE: With this forecast, most of the U.S. will be able to – and should – get their gardens in early because too-hot temps cause blossom drop in tomatoes, peppers, zukes, squash and beans. When flowers do hang on, adult veggies are usually stunted growing 1/2 - 2/3 of normal size.

NOAA's forecast shows it hotter for most of the U.S. for this entire year while few places have extra moisture. Think hot and dry and plant seeds to tolerate these conditions.

It's mid-February and we'll start seeds indoors in 2 weeks. By looking at NOAA's long-range forecast and using the county level frost charts in Garden Gold: Grow Maximum Veggies With Minimum Effort, we see that's a good time to start. These charts for all 50 states down to the county level and give 3 levels for first and last frosts. Frost occurring with 90%, 50% and 10% probabilities. For example, it shows it's pretty safe to plant in Pueblo County by April 30 with a 50-50 chance of frost and only 10% by May 14. This is a great way to jump start veggies.

Since temperatures are warming, we've done well using this chart and keeping an eye on current conditions. In doing so, we're able to get seedlings planted at least 2 weeks early. When it's going to be hot, this is vital.
Biden Shutting Dakota Access Pipeline Would Cause Food Prices to Spike
Texas Goes Dark - 45% US Wheat Damaged - Grand Solar Minimum – HOLLY NOTE: Our plant problems are nothing compared to Texas losing nearly half of their wheat crop, but we're pretty sure this crushing cold wiped out our peach trees, possibly others, and for sure, all of the roses. There was no way to protect and roses when they're big and super super cold, frost cloth does nothing.

On the other extreme, 10 days ago southern Colorado temperatures hit 78º and hovered there for about 3 days and stayed in the 50s-60s. Because Colorado is semi-arid, winter watering is essential if you want trees and lawns to thrive. Combine those really warm days with watering and trees' sap had started to run and some had produced fuzzy little knobs on branches.

A few years back we lost 6 fruit trees when it similarly warmed up. They put out spring shoots and then temps plunged to 28º and stayed there for a week. 1 cherry tree and a plum's trunks cracked wide open. Though we taped them, they were done. 4 others, apples and pears, died down to the root stock.

In the last week we hit sub-zero and 2 nights ago it dropped to -6º two nights ago, so if 28º killed fruit trees, then this year may be even worse. In 20 years in this home, it's never been so frigid. – video of day 2

Food Wars: Nations Halt Exports, Import Anything in Sight – HOLLY NOTE: This must-hear video warns of protein food shortages and more attacks on our power grid infrastructure.

Yesterday, out in the cold, Stan and I thoroughly cleaned the BBQ grill. Should something like this infrastructure attack come to pass – and it is certainly getting legs from Sen. Mitt Romney and for many years from former Speaker Newt Giingrich, we wanted this grill in tip-top shape for an additional method of cooking.

In a pre-emptive move, China is buying up all soybean supplies in sight as it's an integral ingredient in many food products and animal feed besides being consumed on its own. China has already bought up America's soy product for next year that isn't even in the ground yet and US feedmakers are hoarding their supplies, storing them on floating barges.

Personally, after China intentionally and destructively unleashed COVID-19 on the world, I wouldn't sell them the sweat off my brow even if they were on fire. We don't blame in any way the Chinese people who live here or there, but we certainly hold accountable the heartless, greedy, power-hungry, God-hating CCP.

We urge you to take a good look at your resources and preps. See what you need to fill in or replace, and do it as soon as possible. – video of week 1 ALERT
