Drought in the U.S. Ramps Up Considerably in a Week – HOLLY NOTE: This week Colorado Springs, just 45 miles north of us, already put into effect water restrictions. They can only water lawns and gardens 3x a week between the hours 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. through Oct. 15. We can't even remember when it last rained.

Fire bans have been in place for the last 2 months even for those of us who hold burn permits and last night we could smell fire coming from the South. Thankfully Colorado has plenty of stored water, but reservoirs in Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington are in a world of hurt. California was too, last month, but they haven't submitted data yet for May. It's likely they're still in trouble with the mounting drought. More shockingly, Arizona went from a 15% surplus to a 25% deficit. This is only mid-Spring and it could be a very tough wildfire year.

Related: Drought Monitor's Latest – HOLLY NOTE: While we've seen drought considerably worse and more extensive, California's dryness has a good grip. Considering their well-defined rainy season from November to April, this doesn't bode well for the Golden State. Ditto for Oregon whose wet season runs November through March. 2 other stricken states are Colorado and Texas, for which the drought may be relieved as Colorado's monsoon season runs July- Sept. California's Oregon's and Washington's reservoir storage is already below normal.

LOL! According to a New Science Paper, Extreme Rainfall Triggered the 2018 Rift Eruption at Kilauea Volcano – HOLLY NOTE: Actually this is credible science. Kilauea is the longest-erupting volcano in the world and too much rain may have caused that massive eruption. It's long known that increases and decreases in water weight, e.g., extreme rainfall, alter the 'containment' of earthquakes and landmass shifts, which promote earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Excessive rain has the ability to put pressure on tectonic plates and push existing rifts apart. This study is available in the well-respected Nature publication and Stan has addressed this causational factor for over 2 decades.
