China Bridge Made of Steel, But No Match for These Floodwaters HOLLY NOTE: This bridge may have been made of steel, but the steel was manufactured in China. The U.S. has imported their steel before and it buckled, just like their concrete and drywall failed and their tires exploded. This doesn't count the poison found in dog and baby foods, contaminated fish and lead in paint.
There have also been issues with China's imported drugs, toothpaste, ceramic heaters, toy grills and trains, plus pollutants including lead and cadmium in cosmetics. Latest? Shipping out ineffective COVID vaccines around the world and worthless face masks. (sources here, here, here and here.) video

JUNE 29
116º Temperature Marks City’s 3rd Consecutive All-Time Record HOLLY NOTE: Colorado is out of the heatwave this week. It was pretty awful and it looks like we'll be spared what the Northwest is suffering.
One pair of finches lost 4 of their 5 eggs we think due to the heat. In 2 decades nearly all finch pairs saw 100% successful bird hatching.
Every year they build a nest in the wreath on our front door. This year one little guy we actually saw breaking out of his shell and we anxiously waited for the other 4.
The baby finch hatched right at the beginning of blast-furnace temps. One day went by, then 3, then 5. Nothing happened so we knew the eggs were dead. Probably 'cooked'. The only factor that was different this time was the unbearable heat.

Texas Hailstone Confirmed as Largest Ever in State HOLLY NOTE: Big as this is, it's small compared to what's prophesied in Revelation 16:21 hailstones 100 pounds heavy. Stan believes this might occur shortly after the Sun burns 1/3 of the trees and all green grass, when water boils up out of the sea, and causes moisture to form great ice balls in the upper atmosphere.

Bye For Now, La Niña! HOLLY NOTE: This is the good news to see the back of La Niña. The bad news: instead of going into an El Niño, the odds of experiencing another La Niña are 5055%. The U.S. Southwest that's in mega-drought and heatwaves desperately needs El Niño that brings cooler, wetter weather.

Ranchers Sell Off Cattle and Farmers Idle Hundreds of Thousands of Acres as America’s Drought Emergency Escalates HOLLY NOTE: Actually drought isn't escalating, but it's not improving. You can compare any 2 week's maps on Drought Monitor's site. (They're released every Thursday.) If you look at today's map and those for the past 4 weeks, they are nearly identical. This is especially serious for Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, California, Colorado and North Dakota as big swaths are in D4 Exceptional Drought the most extreme category.
Even though it's technically still Spring for another 10 days, we've been living in a blast furnace for the last week. It's shocked some of our peppers into blossom drop. Today it's supposed to be 99ºF and windy, so we've put up shade cloth to guard against more damage. This heat and wind will eradicate the benefits of last week's 3" of rain. Since our area only gets 12" a year, this is big.

Lake Mead Expected to Hit Lowest Point Ever video
Water Reservoir Storage in Trouble for Western States HOLLY NOTE: Out of the 11 western states that depend on stored water, only 3 are in good shape. Lake Mead, located half in Nevada and half in Arizona, is only at 40% capacity. Mead is the largest reservoir in the Colorado River Basin covering nearly 250 sq. miles. Some 25 million people depend on it for their water.
Though California and Arizona haven't reported water in storage for March, they're likely still in trouble based on March's report. Yesterday's Drought Monitor shows the West still in deep weeds and now drought has moved from Severe to Extreme in North and South Dakota.

Warming Up: Outlook for April Temperatures HOLLY NOTE: We started planting our garden a week ago. Tomorrow through Tuesday, we'll be in the 70s-80s and in the 40s at night at least through Tuesday. That's as far as the forecast shows.
Check the table for your county in Garden Gold: Grow Maximum Veggies With Minimum Effort to see when your area has a 50-50% chance of last spring frost. Chances are it will be earlier due to this warmer April, which means you can plant sooner.
That's important this year as NOAA forecasts a considerably hotter-than-normal year for nearly everyone. Plant veggies as soon as possible for the best garden yield. Too-hot temps cause blossom drop in tomatoes, peppers, zukes, squash and beans. When flowers do hang on, adult veggies are usually stunted growing 1/2 - 2/3 of normal size.
