'Life Threatening' Wildfires Raze At Least 600 Homes, a Shopping Mall and a Hotel to the Ground in Boulder, Colorado: State of Emergency Declared After 'Historic' December Blaze Sparked 30,000 to Evacuate – HOLLY NOTE: This wildfire is about 2 hours northwest of us. Early assessments say power lines came down in 115mph wind gusts and ignited the parched ground.

Never have we been so grateful that power lines here in Pueblo West are buried. However, in Pueblo, the city about 20 minutes east of us, their lines are exposed.

Firefighters had no time to work on the fire because their sole job was to get people out. The other factor is that it's impossible to make any progress against that strong wind power, which lasted 7 hours. People had basically no notification, no warning, so they had no time to take anything. At least 7 people have been hospitalized and the Boulder Cty. Sheriff warned that come daylight, they may find bodies.

The raging fire moved at a shocking rate. According to Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle, the fire was "consuming football-field lengths of land in seconds." Tens of thousands are without power and 3 evac centers have been opened. This is tricky now with Omicron fears and trying to keep people socially distanced.

Adding to their misery are frigid nighttime temps. A snowstorm is expected to hit Saturday, which may help extinguish the flames.

107 MPH Gust Recorded On Colorado Eastern Plains, Almost Category 3 Hurricane Force Wind – HOLLY NOTE: Yesterday morning we had 2 weather alerts on our cell phones by 6 am. That's happened only once in nearly 21 years in this house. There weren't gusts, just this non-stop roar with 70-80 mph winds. It was forecast to be over by 4 pm. At bedtime, it was still howling.

When Bella went outside to do her business yesterday, we took her around to the front of the house because weirdly, most of the wind came from the southwest when it's usually from the north or west. When Bella had finished and was sniffing for rabbits, one particularly nasty howling gust pinned her ears to the back of her head. The look on her face said, "I'm done with this! Want inside!"

It was pretty bad here, but not as severe as in other locations. At least we have the mountains to mitigate a bit of the wind. Unfortunately it tears through Colorado's eastern plains with little help from landscape.

We have some tree damage, two broken 15-foot long cottonwood branches that requires the tree service to come out because they're high up. Then a boatload of 3 and 4 foot pieces scattered everywhere.

It could have been a lot worse. At least in Winter, wind passes through branches instead of trapped by leaves, which is a branch 'killer'. Thankfully our roof is intact.

Yesterday Stan had to go to a 'can't miss' appointment. During that time, a repairman came to fix the dishwasher. Both fought cross-winds blowing their vehicles like crazy and both vehicles' windshields now need replacing due to flying small rocks.

We're sure there will be a lot of missing dog reports with fences blown down. Quite a few messages have already popped up on our local forum as well as 'lost' trampolines and needed roof repair. Glad it's over for the most part as severe wind can and does affect some people negatively.

California Is Under a Statewide Drought Emergency As It Sees Its Driest Year In Nearly a Century – HOLLY NOTE: The big question is what took Gov. Newsom so long to declare this emergency? This drought has been ongoing to many months. You'd think he sacrifice smelt to save fresh water for humans. You'd think he would have ordered sharp curbs on water use before now when a number of their reservoirs are at historic or 100-year lows.

Take a look at the 11 western reservoirs' water storage. 6 are in dire straits: Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon. Only Montana and Washington are in excellent shape. Western water supplies are literally in crisis mode.

Summerlike Heat Keeps Central States Sweltering – HOLLY NOTE: We're now in the 2
nd year of La Niña. Not a fan. For people in the West, it means hot dry conditions that diminish snowpak, which runoff supplies the reservoirs, and stunts crops when not killing them outright.

Every Thursday for months we check Drought Monitor. We sound like a broken record because drought's life-draining fingers have stretched mercilessly throughout Western states for a year and a half. While the worst scenarios have moved around in these states, it's unrelenting.

Looking at Drought Monitor's 2 week comparisons (chose today's map compared to 3 months ago, Jul 6), the driest category has edged up into the Pacific NE, but more disappointingly, Abnormally Dry and Moderate Drought conditions have pushed into Texas, Okla, Kan., Nebr., Miss., and Ark.

It was Summer 2020 that we started to see the ugly face of drought and it's not giving up. Today, it's slightly less in the West though till dominant and now moving into the Midwest. Drought may not be as 'eye-grabbing' as a tornado, flood or earthquake, but meteorologists call it The Silent Killer.

It's interesting that when reading Jeremiah 3:3 two days ago, this single verse reminds us that bad behavior gets the reward of rain withheld.
