Colorado Blasted With Late-Spring Snowfall HOLLY NOTE: It's so rare for Colorado to get hit with snow this late in the year it made Fox News' national coverage. March is our snowiest month and absolutely none fell. Ft. Collins, some 175 miles north of us, should have gotten more snow than Pueblo West. It was reported that that northern city only got 2" when we got hammered with 7-8".
Big deciduous trees around the neighborhood really suffered especially cottonwoods and Golden Honeylocusts. During the night, I kept hearing ominous cracking sounds while Stan slept oblivious to the damage taking place.
Yesterday we spent 2 hours dragging broken tree limbs off the roof and from the ground to the burning pit. Thankfully the newly planted fruit trees are OK. Surprisingly tiny peaches, apples, pears, cherries and plums hung on for dear life.

Denver Weather to Go From High 80s to Snow in a Matter of Just Hours HOLLY NOTE: It's not just Denver experiencing really whacked weather. Today is forecast to be 97º and then snow on Saturday morning with a high of 44º. We've had our frost-tender veggies planted for a week, which should be totally safe. Will cover them with several layers of frost protection cloths and install heat lamps underneath. In over 2 decades that we've lived in southern Colorado, we've never experienced these 2 weather extremes 3/4 of the way through May.

Greenhouse Gas Emission Records Shattered HOLLY NOTE: Scientists can harp on greenhouse emissions all they want, but until China gets on board, these discussions are wasted effort. China is responsible for 27% of all greenhouse gases. The U.S. is responsible for 11%. After China, the next 7 countries produce just 35% including the amount from the U.S. China has no interest in reducing emissions as they're building more coal plants.
In fact as of Aug. of last year China has plans for 43 new coal-fired power plants. China's air is so filthy that in March it impacted Las Vegas. So if China won't curb their emissions rather than add to the problem, it's pointless to penalize every other nation.

Tumbleweeds Overrun Utah Neighborhood Following Strong Winds HOLLY NOTE: Yes, it happens. While still living in Australia, had read that an enterprising Colorado woman sold gold-sprayed tumbleweeds for $50 on eBay! I nearly slid off my chair laughing.
This invasive species with no natural way to keep them in check have been known to inundate entire towns. People pay hundreds to have them destroyed. Tumbleweeds are fire hazards, blow across roads and lodge under vehicles, have nasty stickers, embed themselves in fencing, pile up against homes barricading people inside, drop zillions of seeds only to sprout in the next rain and are a grand nuisance.
This woman proved that one man's trash is another man's treasure. Check this photo to see how intrusive they are.

STATE OF EMERGENCY: Gov. Ducey Takes Action As Arizona Wildfire Burns Out Of Control
Drought Growing HOLLY NOTE: Yesterday coming back from errands, we noticed movable Fire Ban signs on the most-traveled roads. One of our local weather stations, KOAA has a never-before-seen "impact warning" of level 4 for Friday. In our 21 years in this home, this high of a warning is a first.
Temperature is supposed to hit an unseasonable 91º today accompanied with "Extreme Fire Danger". Normally spring is a blissful time in Colorado, but this is wretched when it should be just 70º.
Check this map comparing the Drought Monitor today and 1 month ago. (Sorry they don't provide the month comps for Hawaii and Alaska.) Drought has grown noticeably in the South, Southwest and California; and improved in the Southeast and Northeast. With this in mind, look at these 2 agricultural maps here and here. In addition to avian flu and supply chain issues, this gives clues what other foods might be impacted to due drought so you can stock up accordingly.
Another indicator to keep on eye on for those in the West is the state of water reservoirs. It gives a good forecast if water restrictions will be implemented. A wing of the USDA puts out a graph for each of the 11 states every month for how much water is stored.
Snow melt should be finished by the end of June so reservoirs may see some recovery. Right now, they're not in good shape except for Washington. Look at the shocking change for Arizona, which was excellent in February and now horrible in March. "Experts" advise roof rain collection, which is a great idea, but first you actually have rain.
For our particular area, common wisdom is that garden plants and veggies can go in by Mother's Day, which is May 8. However, by keeping a close eye on weather, we'll have everything in on Wednesday, nearly 2 weeks early. Already carrots, romaines, peas, potatoes, radishes, parsley are up. Wednesday will see peppers, tomatoes, melons, squash and weather-tender herbs planted. Veggies done!

U.N. Report Urges 'Immediate And Deep Emissions Reductions' HOLLY NOTE: In that case the UN needs to talk to China who is responsible for 27% of all greenhouse gases. The U.S. is responsible for 11%.

Here's a Look at Your April Temperature Forecast HOLLY NOTE: Be sure to watch this video as you may be able start garden planting early. We certainly are. Ask Stan, he knows I watch the weather forecast like a hawk and check it several times daily.
Life in Colorado is governed by knowing what's coming when to plant, when to cover flowers and veggies for hail, heat and wind protection, when to mow, when to turn off the sprinkler system to save water in this seemingly endless stupid drought.
Unfortunately, California's San Joaquin Valley veggie area is in the 2nd worst drought condition, which will further push up grocery costs. If you can grow your own, or at least a portion of them, it will help.
Drought impact touches every state, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands to some degree except for 8. Not to get Biblical about it, but God withholds rain when he's not happy with a nation and he's got plenty to be angry about with America.
This weekend, we'll be outside expanding our garden. With ridiculous grocery prices, it's more cost-effective to dedicate additional areas to veggies than ever before.
Next week will sadly see the last of our onions. Not too shabby since they were kept simply in boxes in the garage after being harvested last October. Planted nearly 200 onion sets this week that will keep us in good supply for the next 9 months. video
